The Yale Archival Reading Group, YARG, will be holding its next meeting to discuss:

Archives and Social Justice

Wednesday, March 12 at 4:00pm

Room 38 of the Beinecke Library

In Mark Greene's winter "President's Message," he asks the question: "Do archival ethics require active involvement in issues of social justice?" His message does not close with an answer but a call for reflection and discussion. Our next reading group meeting will seek to open this discussion up among the broad community of archivists at Yale. Further reading in Verne Harris's recent Archives and Justice and a look back to a speech given by Howard Zinn in 1970 to the Society of American Archivists will provide additional perspectives on this issue.

Suggested reading:

Greene, Mark A. "Ethics in Archives: Is Social Justice an Archival Ethic?" Archival Outlook (November/December 2007) 3 & 21.  Ethics in Archives.pdf

Harris, Verne."The Archive is Politics" Archives and Justice (2007), 239-252. The Archive is Politics.pdf

A third suggested reading for those interested: Zinn, Howard.  "Secrecy, Archives and the Public Interest" Midwestern Archivist 2:2 (1977), 14-25. Available here.

Another of interest:

A recent article in American Archivist addresses this topic: Jimerson, Randall C. " Archives for All: Professional Responsiblity and Social Justice" American Archivist 70:2 (2007), 252-281.

*Please pardon the upside down pages in this document. It was the easiest way to copy it and I figured these would be printed out and turned right side up!

RSVP to Molly (molly.wheeler@yale.edu) if you plan to attend the reading group (though last-minute attendance without response is always welcome!).

We hope to see you at the next YARG!
