Meeting #4: Privacy and Personal Papers
Wednesday, December 12 at 4:30 pm
Location: Beinecke Room #39

Discussion facilitator: Heather Dean

Archivists are ethically responsible for ensuring open access to archival materials while at the same time protecting privacy and confidentiality of individuals represented within these documents. At times, these ethical responsibilities are in competition, a problem further complicated in personal papers by the lack of formal guidelines. Looking at Sara Hodson’s article as a starting point, discussion will address more broadly the challenges archivists face in managing privacy and access in personal papers.

Suggested reading: Hodson, Sara S. “Privacy in the Papers of Authors and Celebrities.” American Archivist 67.2 (Fall/Winter 2004): 193-211.

Second suggested reading for those interested: Janna Malamud Smith. "Where Does a Writer's Family Draw the Line?" New York Times November 5, 1989.  (smith_malamud.pdf)

And for the really curious:  Max, D. T. “The Injustice Collector: Is James Joyce’s Grandson Suppressing Scholarship?” New York Times June 19, 2006 (http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2006/06/19/060619fa_fact)
